Karachi (HRNW): Robbers looted Rs8 million from a private bank in Korangi No 2 area here on Tuesday.
Police said that a group of five armed men arrived at around 10:30am. After entering the bank, they held security guard Talib Hussain hostage and later moved towards the cash counter. They looted about Rs8 million and managed to flee from the scene.
Being informed, a police team, Counter-Terrorism Department and Special Investigation Unit officials also reached the bank and initiated investigation into the robbery.
DSP Ghulam Nabi Wago quoting initial investigation said that at least five robbers looted the bank – two of them remained guarded outside while three entered the bank.
“The good thing is that they (robbers) did not take the CCTV cameras away with them while fleeing,” he said adding that police was trying to trace out the robbers with the help of footage. The officer further said the robbers took at least eight minutes to loot over Rs8 million. The police took at least two security guards of the bank into custody on the suspicion of being involved in the robbery. A case has been registered against unidentified persons and further investigation was underway. The police said the same branch was also robbed by armed robbers in 2013. Separately, the law enforcement agencies apprehended nearly one dozen workers of political parties over pre-poll violence in Lines Area here. According to details, Lines Area remained under grip of violence following by-elections in PS-115 constituency where particularly two major political parties – Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Muhajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi are in the front line.
From the last couple of days, workers of both parties are attacking each other’s election camps. On Monday, workers of both parties targeted offices the opponents in the locality.
The law enforcement agencies conducted an overnight operation against the workers involved in the pre-poll violence. Extra contingent of Jamshed Town police participated in the overnight targeted raids.
SHO Brigade police station Ghulam Nabi Afridi said that they have apprehended nearly eleven workers from both sides for their involvement in the violence.
He added that cases have been registered against the accused while further investigation was underway.
A situation of tension engulfed Lines Area on Tuesday as both parties were busy holding rallies and corner meetings ahead of upcoming by-elections while extra contingent of law enforcers were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
