31 migrants found in refrigerated lorry at German-Czech border

Leipzig, Germany (dpa) – Thirty-one migrants were discovered in the back of a refrigerated lorry during a check by police and customs officers at the German-Czech border, German police confirmed to dpa.

The vehicle, operating under a Turkish permit, had been bound for Dresden in eastern Germany when it was stopped on Tuesday evening, a federal police spokesman said.

Further details are expected to be released later Wednesday.

People smugglers have frequently hidden migrants in heavy goods vehicles to transport them across Europe, sometimes with fatal consequences.

In Austria in 2015, 71 bodies were found in the back of a sealed lorry that had come from Hungary.

In 2019, 39 Vietnamese people were discovered dead in a refrigerated lorry in Britain after having been smuggled into the country from Belgium.
