Islamabad (HRNW): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will issue today a final list of candidates running for the countrywide by-elections scheduled to be held on Oct 14. As per the schedule for the by-elections, the ECP will allot election symbols to assembly aspirants on Sunday (tomorrow). Polling for 37 seats – 11 of the National Assembly and 26 of the provincial assemblies – will be held on October 14. A number of the National and provincial assemblies’ seats fell vacant after political leaders who had won more than one seats in last month’s elections resigned from all seats but one.
There are also a few constituencies of the lower house of parliament as well as the provincial legislatures where the election couldn’t be held on July 25 owing to the demise of candidates or some other reasons. Overseas Pakistanis will participate in the by-elections through i-voting for the first time. A day earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) extended the deadline for expatriate Pakistanis to register themselves as voters to participate in the i-voting for the by-elections. Expatriate Pakistanis can now get themselves registered till 9:00 am on Monday, according to the Commission. The previous deadline was expiring on Sept 15 (tomorrow).
