German businessman back in public a year after unsolved acid attack

Essen, Germany (dpa) – A German company executive who was seriously injured when two unknown men splashed acid over him last year appeared in public again for the first time on Wednesday. The chief financial officer of energy firm Innogy, Bernhard Guenther, presented the company’s annual figures in the western German city of Essen. Speaking on stage wearing a black bandage covering his forehead, the 52-year-old said he was pleased “to be here today,” as this was “anything but clear this time last year.” On March 4, 2018 Guenther had just finished jogging near his home in the western German town of Haan when two unknown assailants threw him to the ground and poured acid over him. A few weeks after the attack, Guenther was released from hospital and soon went back to work. The attackers have still not been identified; public prosecutors shelved investigations in September.
