German, Brazilian ministers urge peaceful solution in Venezuela

Brasilia (dpa) – The foreign ministers of Germany and Brazil expressed hopes for a peaceful solution in Venezuela, where self-declared interim leader Juan Guaido said he had met military personnel in the “final phase” of a plan to oust President Nicolas Maduro. “Our support for Juan Guaido has not changed in any way,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in Brasilia after meeting his Brazilian counterpart, Ernesto Araujo. “We are observing current developments very closely.” Araujo also expressed support for Guaido. “We are working in support of democracy and freedom in Venezuela, and for that reason we support President Juan Guaido,” he said, according to the official translation. “It is possible that some representatives of the armed forces are recognizing Juan Guaido. Then Brazil will support this project of democratic transition.”
