German police release person of interest in politician shooting case

Berlin (dpa) – A man detained over the mysterious shooting of German politician Walter Luebcke has been released, police said early Sunday.”He was questioned and was free to go afterwards,” a police spokesman said without providing further details. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had reported that a young man who was privately connected to Luebcke was detained and interrogated Saturday. Luebcke, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, was found dead shortly after midnight on June 2 by a relative on the garden terrace of his home near the city of Kassel. Luebcke had been in charge of the regional council of Kassel in the western state of Hesse and served as a lawmaker in Hesse’s parliament for several years. His funeral service is to be held in Kassel on Thursday.
