German police investigate 20 suspects after gang property seized

Berlin (dpa) – German police are investigating 20 people in connection with the seizure of 77 properties in Berlin and the surrounding region that were suspected of belonging to an Arab crime gang. None of the 20 suspects are in custody, a spokeswoman for the Berlin prosecutor told dpa on Thursday. The property, which was provisionally seized in Berlin and Brandenburg in July 2018 and worth around 9 million euros (10.15 million dollars), belongs to a large family of Arab origin. The investigators suspect that houses and land were purchased with the proceeds from crime. The money may have been laundered into the legal economy. The prosecutors were not able to give a forecast for the conclusion of the money-laundering investigations that began in 2016.
