“President World Psychiatric Association Visits Institute for Mental Health Care in Kemari’’

Karachi (HRNW)- Dr. Afzal Jawed, President World Psychiatric Association (MBBS; MCPS-Psych; Dip Psych-London; MPhil-Edin; FRCPsych-UK) along with President of Pakistan Psychiatric Society, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, visited Karwan-e-Hayat, Institute for Mental Health Care on February 29, 2020. Mr. Zaheeruddin Babar, CEO KeH, Mr. Abdul Qadir Patel, MNA-Kemari and Chairman Academics & Research, Prof. Dr. Raza ur Rahman welcomed Dr. Afzal Jawed to KeH. Dr. Afzal keenly visited different facilities and offered his full support for the enhancement of services of various departments of KeH up to the Global Standards.
Dr. Afzal Jawed appreciated the quality of treatment and rehabilitation services being offered to the under privileged people in Pakistan. He applauded the services, and appreciated that more than 98% of patients were getting free medical services. It is estimated that about 15 million people suffer from mental disorders in Pakistan, and approximately 2 million alone in Karachi. KeH provides modern therapy, pharmacology, and new community approaches, which makes treatment of mental illness more holistic and effective. This paves way for the patient to return to a functional life. Last year alone KeH provided psychiatric treatment to more than 77,000 patients.
The World Psychiatric Association is psychiatry’s global association representing 140 psychiatric societies in 120 countries, and bringing together more than 250,000 psychiatrists. It promotes collaborative work in psychiatry through its 70 scientific sections, education programs, publications and events. They stressed to educate people about mental health issues and involve government and elected representative for including mental health in their priorities. Psychiatric services must be started at community level, Said President Pakistan Psychiatric Society.
