Germany’s Adidas agrees to pay rent on stores closed in crisis

Nuremberg, Germany (dpa) – Under mounting public pressure, German sportswear company Adidas on Wednesday agreed to continue to pay rent on stores shuttered during the coronavirus crisis.

In an open letter to landlords announcing a reversal of a previous decision to withhold rent on closed shops, the company acknowledged the move had been seen as “lacking in solidarity.”

“Your opinion is important to us, and your opinion is clear: you have been disappointed by Adidas,” the firm wrote.

Adidas earlier announced it would withhold rent on shuttered premises throughout Europe from April, a move that met with harsh criticism as well as calls online for customers to boycott the sportswear firm.

“For this reason, we would like to apologise in full. We have paid the rents for April,” Adidas said, adding that the brand had always been linked with fairness and team spirit.

The letter also included a warning, stressing that the company’s normal business had ceased around the world: “The shops are closed. Not even a healthy company like Adidas will withstand this for long.”
