Man spits at woman in German supermarket in row over distancing

Friedrichshafen, Germany (dpa) – Police in the southern German city of Friedrichshafen are looking for a man who spat at a woman in a supermarket during a row about keeping a safe distance during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The two were standing in the cashier area when it came to an altercation about respecting the recommended minimal distance, according to a police statement issued on Sunday.

The 27-year old woman apologized to the man in front of her, but he became aggressive, raised his hand as if to hit her and spat in her face.

The police put out an appeal for witnesses who can help track down the perpetrator, estimated to be around 35 years old and wanted on charges of assault.

Authorities in Germany, as in many other countries, are recommending that people keep their distance from one another to minimise the risk of transmitting the new coronavirus, which can trigger the potentially lethal Covid-19 disease.

Many supermarkets there are now fitted with screens to protect cashiers from infected customers.
