Berlin (dpa) – A group of 58 minors currently in refugee camps on Greek islands off the Turkish coast are to arrive in Germany on Saturday.
Germany is also prepared to take in further child refugees, the Interior Ministry said in a statement issued in Berlin on Wednesday.
Greek authorities and UN organizations must provide information on the children’s origin and whether they have relatives in another EU country before a decision can be made, it said.
Germany aims to take in up to 500 unaccompanied minors from the crowded camps, mainly children under the age of 14, as well as sick children and girls.
A total of 1,500 sick children and unaccompanied minors are to be resettled across the EU. To date only 12 have arrived in Luxembourg.
On arrival, the 58 will spend two weeks in quarantine before being distributed across the country.
