Police break up gathering of 350 people in Germany

Pirna (dpa) – Police in the German town of Pirna broke up a gathering of around 350 people on Wednesday evening, officials said.

Police said they had been alerted to a “walk” happening in the central German town’s market square, organized via Facebook.

Officers arrived around 7 pm (1700 GMT) and dispersed the crowd of some 350 people from the market square within 15 minutes, police said.

Police have begun investigations into the violation of the state of Saxony’s “Corona Protection Ordinance”.

City councillors from multiple parties had called for the unauthorized gathering, which hospitality workers also joined, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry told dpa early Thursday.

The so-called “silent walk” was allegedly in protest of coronavirus-related restrictions, according to the spokesperson.
