Boateng calls death of Floyd an ‘unscrupulous murder’

German World Cup winner Jerome Boateng has spoken of his shock at pictures showing the death of American George Floyd at the hands of police.

“It was an unscrupulous murder that was filmed this time. It brought out a mixture of anger, lack of understanding and compassion in me,” the 31-year-old Bayern Munich defender told Sky Sports on Sunday.

Boateng said growing up in Berlin he had experienced racism on the pitch from childhood opponents and their parents. “But also later, as is well-known, there was still hostility from some corners.”

Worldwide protests against racism in which people speak out and show solidarity are “good and important,” said Boateng.

Floyd, 46, died late May in Minneapolis after a police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes.

Various protests and anti-racism messages have been seen in German football since his death including from champions Bayern Munich.
