Former AfD member sues over exclusion from German far-right party

The former head of a regional chapter of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has begun legal action against the party because it excluded him for membership of extremist organizations.

Former AfD member Andreas Kalbitz told dpa on Thursday he had filed the lawsuit with the Berlin district court against his exclusion from the party in May.

“I am very confident,” Kalbitz told dpa, confirming earlier reports of his move by regional broadcaster RBB.

AfD members voted to exclude Kalbitz from the party at a national level in mid-May, although members in the state of Brandenburg voted to retain him as head of the party in the state legislature.

The party says it excluded Kalbitz on the basis of his former membership of the now-banned far-right extremist group Heimattreuen Deutschen Jugend (HDJ, German Youth Faithful to the Homeland), as well as the Republicans, in the 1990s.

The decision has triggered a power struggle within the AfD leadership.
