German diocese: Former pope Benedict XVI to fly back to Rome Monday

Rome (dpa) – Former pope Benedict XVI, who has flown to his native Germany to visit his sick brother, will return to the Vatican on Monday, the German diocese hosting him says.

“Exact times” for the return trip have not yet been determined, the Diocese of Regensburg, in the southern state of Bavaria, tweeted on Sunday.

Regensburg Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer was due to make a press statement at 2 pm (1300 CET) on Monday, the diocese added.

Benedict arrived in Germany on Thursday. News of the trip was a major surprise, as the 93-year-old has not made any foreign trip since leaving the papacy in 2013.

The retired pontiff, whose birth name is Joseph Ratzinger, is 93 and in frail health. He is very attached to his ailing brother Georg, who is 96 and also a priest.
