Video of German tourists partying on Mallorca unnerves island

Hundreds of holidaymakers from Germany are said to have packed onto the party beach Ballermann on the Spanish island of Mallorca without paying any notice to coronavirus distancing guidelines on Friday evening.

A video of the party scene published by the Mallorca Zeitung on Saturday showed the dense crowd of people celebrating, drinking and dancing “as if there was no coronavirus,” the newspaper reported.

Practically no one can been seen wearing a mask. The minimum distance of one and a half meters prescribed by the Spanish government was not adhered to on the street or in the pubs.

The pictures dismayed many on the island historically popular with German tourists, which has begun welcoming back sun-seeking visitors after Spain’s coronavirus lockdown.

The newspaper reported that the scenes on the beach show “how great the danger of a second wave on Mallorca could be.”

The few people who wore masks were at times laughed at, the newspaper reported.

Although Spain was one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in Europe, the numbers have dropped sharply since mid-May.
