Germany’s Maas: Iran playing ‘dangerous role’ in regional conflicts

Germany’s top diplomat spoke out on Thursday in favour of holding talks with Iran about its missile programme and the role the Islamic republic plays in the Libyan, Syrian and Iraqi conflicts.

“Iran must change its behaviour in the region,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in Berlin after meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi.

“We are not naive when it comes to Iran and we know that Iran plays a dangerous role in the region,” Maas added.

The United States withdrew in 2018 from an international agreement aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Washington accuses Tehran of meddling in regional affairs and has reimposed sanctions on Iran under its “maximum pressure” campaign to get the country to change its behaviour.

Germany, France and Britain are nonetheless determined to stick to the 2015 nuclear deal and exert influence within that framework.

The issue has come up at the United Nations Security Council, where the US is agitating to have UN sanctions reimposed on Iran.

Israel supports the US course and sees Iran as a threat to its very existence.
