150 detained at Berlin demonstrations during German Unity Day

Some 150 people were detained at German Unity Day demonstrations in Berlin this weekend, most of them during a right-wing extremist march in the city’s north east, police said Sunday.

The demonstration by the right-wing extremist party Der III Weg (The Third Way) took place in the Berlin district of Hohenschoenhausen, with a 1,500-strong counter demonstration resulting in clashes and arrests.

Criminal investigations on suspicion of disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and property damage were under way, police said.

“In a few cases stones and bottles were thrown in the direction of the security forces,” a police spokesman said.

Of the 2,700 police officers deployed across the city, 36 were injured at a series of German Unity Day-related demonstrations.

The demonstrations were held by activists from across the political spectrum, as well as those protesting coronavirus measures imposed by the government.
