Kiel, Germany (dpa) – A married couple from the German port city of Kiel were handed suspended sentences for attempted insurance fraud on Wednesday after the man faked his own death at sea.
The 53-year-old man received a suspended sentence of one year and nine months, while his wife got one year.
The couple were acquitted on all 13 other counts.
They were accused of having faked the husband’s death in order to cash in on 4.1 million euros (around 5 million dollars) claimed from a total of 14 life and accident insurance policies.
The man, whose mother was also charged in the case, faked a motorboat accident on the Baltic Sea in October 2019 before going into hiding for several months.
The cash was never paid out.
