Berlin (dpa) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a diplomatic solution to salvage the nuclear deal with Tehran in a phone call with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani.
According to government spokesperson Steffen Seibert, Merkel was worried that Iran “would continue not to fulfil its obligations under the nuclear deal.”
Therefore, it was “high time for positive signals to build trust and increase the chances for diplomatic solutions,” Merkel said according to Seibert.
The United States and Europe have criticized Iran for continuing to breach the nuclear deal’s key provisions, and are meeting on Thursday in order to discuss how to restore the agreement. Top diplomats from Germany, France and Britain will take part in the video talks along with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
