Bayern will have Mueller and Gnabry against Cologne

Bayern Munich will welcome back Thomas Mueller and Serge Gnabry in the Bundesliga game against Cologne on Saturday.

“Thomas Mueller is back in the squad. He trained individually [on Thursday] and had been training at home before that,” coach Hansi Flick told a news conference on Friday.

“Thomas has a good base fitness, that goes in his favour. We haven’t yet decided how we will use him,” Flick added.

Mueller tested positive for coronavirus just a few hours before the Club World Cup final in Qatar on February 11, and has been in quarantine since.

“We’re happy he’s back. Thomas is an exceptional player. He’s very active and brings a certain atmosphere to the team,” the coach said.

Flick also said Gnabry will be available after recovering from a muscular problem.

Bayern were able to keep it classy in the Champions League by beating Lazio 4-1 away, but see themselves in trouble in the Bundesliga.

After a draw against Arminia Bielefeld and a defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt, leaders Bayern saw second-placed RB Leipzig close the gap to two points.

But even with the recent setbacks, Flick praised his squad.

“Of course we dropped points against Bielefeld and Frankfurt. But the way the team train, the mentality they have, it’s outstanding,” the coach said.

Flick also celebrated the fact that after the game against Cologne, Bayern will have two consecutive weeks with no mid-week games – something rare for the German champions this season.
