Pfizer/BioNTech starts testing coronavirus vaccine on under-11s

Frankfurt (dpa) – The Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine is now being tested on children aged between 6 months and 11 years, a BioNTech spokesman told dpa on Friday.

So far, the Covid-19 vaccine, jointly developed by the Mainz-based company and the US pharmaceutical giant, has received conditional approval for adolescents aged 16 and over.

The first subjects aged 11 and under received their first doses of the vaccine on Thursday as part of the first phase of the study.

If safety and efficacy are confirmed and authorities grant approval, the vaccine could be available to younger children in early 2022, the companies said.

The vaccine is already being tested on children between the ages of 12 and 15 in phase-three trials. Some 2,259 children in this age group are reported to be taking part in this study. The data will be published soon.
