Bayer Leverkusen extend contract of birthday boy Wirtz

Bayer Leverkusen have extended the contract of young star Florian Wirtz until 2026, the Bundesliga club said on Monday, when the player celebrated his 18th birthday.

Wirtz, who previously had a deal until 2023, has completed 44 games for the club, with eight goals and eight assists.

“While Florian Wirtz is a promise for the future, he’s also a guarantee for sporting success in the present,” Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said.

Wirtz joined Leverkusen from local rivals Cologne in January 2020 and has already become a “main charachter in our professional team,” managing director Rudi Voeller said.

The midfielder added: “I can continue to improve in a great team, that remains my ambition. With my performances, I want to contibute to achieve titles in the near future.”
