Schalke name ex-Mainz man Schroeder new sports director

Rouven Schroeder has been appointed Schalke sports director from next season onwards, the relegated Bundesliga club said on Tuesday.

Schroeder, 45, who worked at Mainz 2016-2020, will be in charge of squad planning and scouting in the sporting leadership around board member for sports Peter Knaebel.

“The supervisory board and the board are in agreement that the many sporting tasks cannot be shouldered by just one person, and that we need additional expertise,” Knaebel said in a statement.

“We’ve managed to bring an expert to Schalke in Rouven. He possesses the necessary contacts as well as the expertise in his area.

“His main task will be to build a new team that can represent Schalke successfully both now and in the future.”

Schalke also named Mathias Schober head of their academy formerly run by Knaebel.
