Social trips across Austrian-German border permitted from Wednesday

Friends and relatives will be able to meet again across the German-Austrian border from Wednesday, as coronavirus infection rates in both southern Germany and Austria decline.

Bavarian state Premier Markus Soeder made the announcement after talks with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in Munich on Tuesday.

Shopping in the neighbouring country would also be allowed again, Soeder said.

Austria will be reopened for tourists from May 19, Kurz said; Bavaria is set to reopen for tourism two days later.

Infection rates are now lower in both regions, with Bavaria at 116 and Austria at less than 100 infections per 100,000 inhabitants during the last seven days.

German visitors account for, by far, the largest group of foreign tourists in Austria.
