Record winners Germany nominate provisional squad for women’s Euros

Captain Alexandra Popp leads Germany’s provisional squad of 28 players for this summer’s women’s Euros in England.

Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg made the announcement Tuesday and will have drop five players for the final 23-player roster to be at the July 6-31 tournament.

The provisional squad has eight players each from Bundesliga and Cup champions Wolfsburg, including forward Popp and goalkeeper Almuth Schult, and league runners-up Bayern Munich. Hoffenheim’s Jule Brand is the youngest member at age 19.

Olympique Lyon’s Dzsenifer Marozsan is missing with a severe knee injury and Chelsea’s Melanie Leupolz is pregnant.

The team will have two training camps before the Euros where they are placed in tough Group B along with Denmark, Spain and Finland.

“We’re pleased that things are finally getting going are we’re full of motivation for our preparations ahead of the European Championship,” Voss-Tecklenburg said.

“We want to lay the foundations for a top performance at the finals, in our play, as a team, and individually.”

Germany are record winners with eight titles from 12 tournaments but the Netherlands are the defending champions.
