At least three people have been killed and about 60 people injured in a train accident on Friday near the southern German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, according to local officials.

Sixteen of the wounded sustained serious injuries when the passenger train derailed in the village of Burgrain, a spokesman for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office told dpa.

The train was travelling towards Munich when it came off the tracks for reasons that have yet to be established, police spokesman Stefan Sonntag said.

Three carriages had tipped over after coming off the tracks.

Sonntag added that a “major operation” was under way to free passengers from the wreckage and that people were being pulled out through the windows of the carriages.

There were fears that many children were on the train, given that it was the start of school holidays in Bavaria.

The train line between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and nearby Oberau was shut down while the rescue operation took place.
