Culture Minister Roth assures Moldova of Germany’s support

German State Minister for Culture Claudia Roth has emphasized the role of Moldova in helping Ukrainian refugees during a visit to the former Soviet republic.

This support will not be forgotten, Roth said on Wednesday in the capital Chișinău, where the Green politician opened an exhibition on 30 years of German-Moldovan relations.

Ukraine’s neighbour, with a population of about 3 million, has taken in about half a million refugees on a temporary or longer-term basis since the Russian war began.

“Aid will not be forgotten,” Roth stressed. Germany will continue to support Moldova in its social, economic and cultural development, she said.

In Chișinău, Roth met her Moldovan counterpart Sergiu Prodan.

The two share a cultural past: While Roth used to work in theatres and as manager of the rock band Ton Steine Scherben (Sound/Clay Stone Shards), Prodan worked as a director. His film “Patul lui Procust” (The Bed of Procrustes) was shown in the programme of the Berlinale Film Festival in 2001.

Before her visit to Moldova, Roth was the first member of the German Cabinet since the beginning of the Russian war on February 24 to visit the strategically important Ukrainian city of Odessa for two days. The focus was on the effects of the war on the cultural metropolis.
