KARACHI (HRNW) Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Monday nominated party’s spokesperson Murtaza Wahab for the Karachi mayor slot and Salman Murad for deputy mayor.
Taking to Twitter, he congratulated all the nominees for Sindh local government and expressed faith in the chosen candidates for “serving the people”.
Meanwhile, PPP Sindh president Nisar Khuhro announced names of slots of chairmen, deputy chairmen, mayors, and deputy mayors.
According to Sindh local government law, Mr Wahab will have to win the elections within six months to retain the slot if he is elected. The election for mayor slot are scheduled to be held on June 15. So far, no political party has managed to secure majority as PPP gained 155 seats while the JI succeeded in winning 130 seats. PTI stands at the third spot with 63 seats.
A simple majority of 179 is required for a mayor to be elected. The PDM has 175 seats while the JI and the PTI have 193 seats combined, placing the alliance apparently in the strong position to have their mayor elected.
Wahab asks JI to accept PPP’s mandate with ‘open mind’
Mr Wahab said the JI should accept the PPP’s mandate with open mind, adding that the people of Karachi gave mandate to the PPP. “It is the time to work,” he added.
Sharing his priorities as mayor with Dunya News, he said he would solve Karachi’s fundamental problems on emergency basis. “The administration would improve water and sanitation system, transport system, and city’s infrastructure under his watch,” he added.
He also vowed to open vocational training centres for youth.
In a Twitter post, he thanked the PPP’s leadership for the “honour of nominating” him for the post.
