Myths debunked at World Snake Day seminar

Okara (HRNW) In a seminar, organized in connection with the World Snake Day, the speakers debunked various myths and misconceptions about snake medicines and their spiritual effects as propagated by quakes and hermits.
Addressing to the participants of the seminar, the Vice Chancellor and Chairman Department of Zoology, Prof Dr Muhammad Wajid, told that all the methods used by hermits to catch snakes and tame them were fraudulent. Moreover, he talked about various species of snakes and their habitats.
Prof Wajid also discussed the scientific snake handling techniques and the ways to save lives in case of snake bites. He told the students about snake milking and the sale of their venoms for pharmaceuticals.
Dr Muhammad Adnan, In-Charge Department of Wildlife & Ecology, imparted awareness on the preventive measures to avoid snake bites during monsoon season. He said, “There happen 1.8 to 2.7 million deaths off snake bites annually and most of those occur in the subcontinent region. Here, farmers encounter snakes during the cultivation of rice crops.” He also hailed the interventions of Rescue 1122 regarding snake handling and provision of first aid to the victims.
At the end of the seminar, Prof Wajid vowed to take the students to the field visit of different areas for identification of various snake species found in Pakistan.
