Approval process begins for planned Tesla factory near Berlin

The approval process on plans for a huge Tesla factory near Berlin began on Friday, after details of the project were published in the Brandenburg Official Gazette.

Tesla wants to manufacture the Model Y compact SUV in the so-called Gigafactory from 2021. Construction of the factory is scheduled to start in the first half of 2020.

The plans are in line with deadlines set by the local government’s Tesla task force, according to Axel Vogel, environment minister for the state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin. “Everything is going according to plan,” he said.

The company’s plans are available for inspection by the public and local authorities likely to be affected by the project for one month.

Objections can be filed until March 5.

The plans and a related environmental impact assessment will be laid out in several public buildings on Monday and are also available on the internet, according to the Brandenburg environment ministry.

Among other things, the focus is on whether all regulations for the protection of the environment have been complied with.
