Munich’s Salihamidzic counters coach on reinforcements call; no Sane

Doha (dpa) – Bayern Munich sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said on Thursday he is not happy with coach Hansi Flick’s call for reinforcements via the media, and ruled out a January signing of Germany winger Leroy Sane.

Confronted with several injuries, Flick had on Wednesday named the personnel situation “really bad” and added in an interview with Thursday’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung that a right back and a winger were needed.

“I was surprised by the squad planning via the media. I am just not a friend of squad planning via the media,” Salihamidzic told reporters at Munich’s winter break training camp in Qatar.

But Salihamidzic also acknowledged that “we have no dispute” when it comes to needing new faces in the squad – while cautioning that the January transfer window is a difficult period to get new players.

“I want to help the coach. We are looking at options but it is difficult to strengthen the team,” Salihamidzic said. “Top players are not released in this transfer period.”

Salihamidzic insisted that “Bayern’s future doesn’t depend on a right back” and said they were not even close to signing a player.

He also said that Sane is “no issue” right now as the Manchester City winger is still recovering from a severe knee injury.

The seven-time reigning Bundesliga champions lie third, four points behind leaders RB Leipzig, before they restart on January 19 at Hertha Berlin. Bayern are also still in the Champions League and German Cup.
