Flick gives Bayern Sunday off after 5-0 hammering of Schalke

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick gave his team Sunday off after they crushed Schalke 5-0 to move just a point behind Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig.

A surprise 2-0 defeat for Leipzig at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday opened the door for the German champions and they ruthlessly took full advantage through Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Mueller, Leon Goretzka, Thiago Alcantara and Serge Gnabry.

“We want to play beautiful and successful football. That is what we are doing at the moment. Let’s just make sure that it continues,” Flick told Sky as he confirmed his flying team deserved a day off.

“The crucial thing is that we have scored three points, the way we did it must give us even more self-confidence.”

Bayern visit lowly Mainz next Saturday at the start of a jam-packed February that includes a German Cup last 16 game at home to Hoffenheim and the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash with Chelsea.
