German football insists season will continue despite coronavirus

The German Football League (DFL) says there is “no question” that the Bundesliga season will be played to its scheduled end in May.

The coronavirus outbreak brings “the whole of society and thus also football in a difficult situation,” DFL chief executive Christian Seifert said.

The DFL will hold crisis talks with clubs, who will remain in close contact with local authorities. But there is “no question that the season must be played through mid-May to determine promoted and relegated teams and the participants for the international competitions,” Seifert said.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn on Sunday recommended cancelling events with more than 1,000 participants in an effort to reduce the number of coronavirus infections.
