Record number of Germans apply for e-car subsidy scheme

A record number of people applied for the German government’s buyer’s premium scheme for fully electric and hybrid cars in March, according to monthly data released on Thursday.

In total, 12,365 individuals or companies registered for the environmental subsidy with the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control.

This beat the previous record of 10,000, set on October 2019.

The premium was increased in the second half of February, which may have helped to stave off the damaging impact of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

In March, 7,898 applications for the scheme were for people buying electric-powered vehicles, which come with a premium of up to 3,000 euros.

The amount for plug-in hybrid models – for which there were 4,464 applications – is up to 2,250.

The government subsidies must be matched by the car manufacturer in the form of a discount, meaning the buyer saves double those amounts.

Almost 191,838 people have taken advantage of the state offer since the scheme was launched in mid-2016.

However, Germany is behind its environmental targets when it comes to the number of e-cars on the road and the development of charging infrastructure.
