Germany’s Merkel says no ‘political consensus’ for coronabonds

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reiterated her rejection of common debt insurance, widely referred to as coronabonds, to tackle the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Merkel told a video conference for members of her conservative bloc that there was no “political consensus” for issuing coronabonds, a person who participated in the call told dpa.

The video conference is set to be continued later on Thursday, the source said.

The chancellor’s comments come as EU finance ministers try to take another stab at approving a set of fiscal measures to combat the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, after failing to overcome their differences in protracted talks earlier this week.
