Bayern Munich sell club facemasks to support coronavirus charity

Bayern Munich have recycled thousands of scarves to make non-medical facemasks to be sold to fans with proceeds going to a social programme founded by their players.

“It’s a central concern for us to make a positive contribution during the current Covid-19 crisis,” board member Joerg Wacker said Friday. “In the spirit of sustainability, the material for the Bayern scarves will be reused for a good cause.”

The scarves marking the club’s 120th anniversary were originally to be given out at the Champions League second leg match at home to Chelsea in March, which was postponed and if played at all would take place behind closed doors.

Money from sales will go to the ‘We kick Corona’ charity programme created by Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka which has raised almost 4 million euros (4.3 million dollars).

“It’s very nice that the club is supporting us – and now we hope that a good amount for a good cause will come out of it.”

Bundesliga champions Bayern are not the first German club to make masks for their fans. Second division SV Hamburg sold 57,000 – equal to the capacity of their stadium – with proceeds going to their own charity foundation.
