Dusseldorf (dpa) – An Islamic State terrorist from western Germany who took her three children to Syria to join the militia’s self-proclaimed caliphate was sentenced to five years and three months in prison on Wednesday.
The Dusseldorf court found the 33-year-old guilty of a number of crimes, including membership in a terrorist organization.
She had confessed to moving to Syria with her children. Prosecutors said her young son was killed there in a missile attack.
They had been pushing for a seven-year sentence, arguing that the defendant had put her children in grave danger and exposed them to an extremist ideology.
But the defence team argued that the woman had been naive and had not knowingly broken the law. They had hoped for a sentence of three and a half years.
