Supreme Court reverses decision on opening markets on the weekend

Islamabad (HRNW)  The Supreme Court has reversed its verdict opening markets and shops on Saturdays and Sundays.

The judgement was passed during a hearing on the coronavirus suo motu case on Monday. On May 18, the top court ordered all provinces to open shopping malls so that people can prepare for Eidul Fitr. It said that the markets should stay open on the weekend too.

The attorney-general told the court that the federal government has taken steps to ensure coronavirus SOPs are followed, adding that specific laws have been made by provincial governments.

Press conferences won’t help protect people, remarked Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed. The government must make laws and implement them. “Why can’t Parliament work if all other institutions are working? The federal government should be playing the lead role in the fight against the virus.”
