No overseas training trips for German ski racers

Munich (dpa) – German ski racers won’t hold training camps in South America or New Zealand because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the nation’s ski federation alpine chief, Wolfgang Maier.

Maier told dpa on Monday that the athletes would train on European glaciers instead for the new season due to start in October.

Downhill skiers normally go to Chine in August but Maier said that long-distance trips are too risky at the moment, and that the athletes would train in Austria, Switzerland or Italy, possibly also in Norway. The German Alps have no glaciers.

“Our centre will definitely be in Europe. You must adapt. A lot of flexibility is required,” Maier said.
