Wagner’s great-granddaughter returns to Bayreuth after illness

Katharina Wagner, until earlier this year director of the Bayreuth Festival and great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner, aims to return to work in the autumn after recovering from an illness, a festival spokesman said in Bayreuth on Wednesday.

“We are all hoping this will happen,” he said. Earlier, the Nordbayerische Kurier newspaper reported the 42-year-old Wagner’s pending return to work.

“We will be really happy if she returns in the autumn,” the paper quoted festival board chairman Georg Freiherr von Waldenfels as saying. He added that Wagner was “full of energy again.”

At the end of April, the festival made known that Wagner was suffering from a long-term illness, suggesting that she would not be fit to work for several months.
