Merkel ‘relieved’ about new EU budget and coronavirus recovery deal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is “relieved” as a deal has been struck for the EU’s recovery package and long-term budget after long days of negotiations.

“I am very relieved. In February we didn’t succeed, but now we did,” she said in a press conference. “This is a good signal.”

In the same news conference, France’s President Emmanuel Macron said he “congratulated himself” for having pushed for a policy of solidarity together with his German counterpart.

“The conclusions are truly historical,” he said.
