Rummenigge optimistic over Alaba, says Thiago can go for right price

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is quietly confident that defender David Alaba will extend his contract but says Thiago Alcantara can go for the right price.

He also appeared to confirm on-loan trio Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and Alvaro Odriozola would not be recruited again for next season.

Austria’s Alaba, 28, started as a left back but has become Bayern’s senior centre back this term with a series of commanding displays as the Bavarians wrapped up a second straight domestic double. They face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals on Friday in Lisbon.

“With Alaba, I am cautiously optimistic that we will find a solution,” Rummenigge told reporters.

Alaba has just a year left on his deal.

Spain midfielder Thiago has been considering whether he wants a new challenge. Media reports have said he is keen on moving to Liverpool but other reports say Juergen Klopp thinks he is too old at 29.

“If a club comes to us and is prepared to pay a serious and fair transfer fee, we will look into it,” said Rummenigge.

Bayern have brought in winger Leroy Sane as well as a few reserves for next season but Rummenigge said the club is facing “financial challenges” in the coronavirus era and will “not make any more investments.”

Their squad is still threadbare in places meaning Bayern’s successful policy of loaning big name players may have to continue.

But it looks almost certain current loanees Coutinho (Barcelona), Perisic (Inter Milan) and Odriozola (Real Madrid) will not be back in Munich for the September start of the new season. They are staying on though for the Champions League finals tournament in Lisbon.

“I think it’s good that all three players are still here now and that they are playing the season to the end,” Rummenigge said.

Coutinho has been linked in the media with Arsenal.
