DFB director Bierhoff fears Euro tournament behind closed doors

Next year’s European championships could be played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to German Football Federation director Oliver Bierhoff.

Bierhoff said in an interview with the ran.de portal he doesn’t expect a cancellation of the tournament pushed back by one year but that fans may not be able to attend the event at a dozen venues across Europe.

“I believe that looking after a team is very possible when they are shielded in a kind of bubble all the time. Unfortunately, it becomes much more difficult and critical concerning spectators,” Bierhoff said.

“The big question for me is whether this Euro will be a fan festival or just a European football championship with games.

“We saw in the Champions League that it can work. Even if, in the end, of course, it wasn’t nearly what we know it can be,” he said.

All matches organized by the ruling body UEFA are currently played behind closed doors, except Thursday’s European Super Cup where 15,180 fans in Budapest saw Bayern Munich beat Sevilla 2-1.

That match was a test for UEFA on possibly allowing fans back. A decision is expected next week.

At the Euro tournament next summer, Germany play world champions France, title holders Portugal and a play-off winner in Munich in the group stage.
