Germany’s 1990 world champions celebrate anniversary

Germany’s world champions from 1990 have celebrated the 30th anniversary of the title in the then host country of Italy on the weekend.

Captain Lothar Matthaeus marked the occasion in Tuscany together with Andreas Brehme, scorer of the 1-0 winner in the Rome final against Argentina, coach Franz Beckenbauer and other members of the squad such as forward Juergen Klinsmann.

“We were the perfect team in 1990, with many players with character who however submitted to team spirit,” Matthaeus said.

Guests also included former East German footballers and Philipp Lahm, captain of the 2014 World Cup winning team.

“We became world champions in summer and in autumn we celebrated Germany’s political and sporting reunification. It makes me happy that so many members of the German football family have found their way to Tuscany,” Matthaeus said.

Matthaeus had recently spoken of a rift between the former internationals and the German Football Federation (DFB), and no DFB official was invited for the anniversary event.

That also led to criticism from former Germany captain Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, now Bayern Munich chairman.

“Lothar Matthaeus and Andy Brehme had their 30th anniversary World Cup party on the weekend in Tuscany. They had to organize it themselves. The DFB didn’t forget them, it made excuses in connection with corona,” Rummenigge told Sunday paper Welt am Sonntag.
