Coach Loew sees possible Goetze return into Germany team

German 2014 World Cup hero Mario Goetze is playing well and could return into the national team after more than three years, coach Joachim Loew said in an interview published on Monday.

“We are not losing sight of him,” Loew told the Sportbuzzer portal.

Loew named Goetze’s move to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven as a right decision after his contract at Borussia Dortmund was not renewed, and said he was impressed how well he is playing there.

“That couldn’t be expected. He appears to be very fresh and agile, you can see the joy. He needs that for his light-footedness, for his variability,” Loew said.

The coach added he has kept in touch with the 28-year-old forward over the last weeks.

Goetze, who scored Germany’s winner in the 2014 World Cup final, is also hoping for a return into the national team he last played for in 2017, possibly at next year’s European championships.

“I would be really happy to play again for the national team,” he told the Bild daily.

“The Euro is a big dream for me, especially because I was not at the 2018 World Cup. My hunger for titles has became bigger in the meantime.”

German Football Federation (DFB) director Oliver Bierhoff also welcomed Goetze’s promising start at PSV.

“I’m happy Mario is connecting quickly. If he plays well or keeps a good shape he can always be an option for the national team,” Bierhoff said.

Loew meanwhile also said he believes the World Cup winner was a burden for Goetze.

“With the goal in 2014 he had a backpack on, which must have been a heavy burden,” Loew said.
