Demonstration against virus measures held on German-Polish border

Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany (dpa) – Accompanied by a large police presence, a demonstration by opponents of restrictions imposed to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic began on Saturday in the town of Frankfurt an der Oder on the border with Poland.

According to the police, 1,500 participants were registered for the demonstration organized by the Querdenken (Lateral Thinking) initiative.

Together with guests from Poland, the organizers said they wanted to take a stand “for peace and freedom.”

Two counter-demonstrations are planned.

A spokesman for the town of Frankfurt an der Oder called on citizens to stay at home in a local newspaper.

The police had pointed out that the minimum safe social distance must be observed during demonstrations and that a mask must be worn.

Some of the participants in the demonstration by the coronavirus-measure opponents stood close together on the stage, most of them were not wearing a mask.

Querdenken founder Michael Ballweg, who was expected as a speaker, emphasized before the demonstration: “We call from the stage that the guidelines that are mentioned are adhered to.”

In Slubice on the Polish side of the border, only four rallies with five participants each were allowed. The officials assumed that participants from Poland would also travel to Frankfurt an der Oder.
