German far-right party at lowest level in polls since July 2017

Berlin (dpa) – The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party would only garner 7 per cent of votes if an election were held in Germany now, its worst popularity since July 2017, according to the pollsters.

The figures come from the latest RTL/ntv “trend barometer” published on Saturday by the opinion research institute Forsa and represent a drop of two percentage points for the AfD since last week.

The German governing parties remains largely stable in the same opinion poll.

If the Bundestag were to be re-elected now, Chancellor Angela’s Merkel’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc could expect 37 per cent of the vote and the junior coalition partner Social Democrats (SPD) 15 per cent.

The conservatives have improved by one point, while the SPD have fallen by one point.

The opposition Greens gained two percentage points compared to the previous week and achieved 21 per cent in the poll.

The hard-left Die Linke (The Left) improved by one point to 8 per cent, while the Free Democrats (FDP) were unchanged on 6 per cent.

The data were collected by Forsa on behalf of the RTL Media Group between November 23 and 27, 2020, from 2,500 respondents and have a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
