Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall uses Covid lull to clean organ

Hamburg (dpa) – The Elbphilharmonie concert hall in the city of Hamburg plans to make the most of a coronavirus shutdown by cleaning its organ and using the time for general upkeep.

Germany’s cultural and leisure facilities, together with bars and restaurants, have been closed since early November under a partial lockdown, which Chancellor Angela Merkel and the premiers of Germany’s 16 states recently agreed to prolong until January 10.

The Elbphilharmonie said in a statement on Friday that it has decided to keep its Grand Hall closed even longer, until January 27, in order to get essential maintenance work done.

This is possible due to the fact that event organizers had already cancelled all the dates in the January programme for that space, the concert hall added.

The venue had initially planned to do the maintenance work in mid-2021, but now the plan is to reduce the summer break to just two weeks, in the hope that some cancelled events can be allowed to go ahead then.

The venues other smaller halls are to reopen from January 11, according to the statement.

The building’s popular viewing platform, which looks out over the port of the northern German city, is also to reopen from that date.
