German police record 200,000 mask rule violations on train network

German police have recorded 200,000 incidents since September during which people were caught at train stations and on trains without face masks, which are mandatory as part of an effort to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The police said that some 3,700 violations were reported by other passengers during the period. In around 500 cases, police asked the culprits to leave the train or train station where the violation took place.

They emphasized, however, that the vast majority of passengers are adhering to the rule.

Dieter Romann, the president of the federal police headquarters in Potsdam on the outskirts of Berlin, said that wearing a mask had become “a question of courtesy and respect for others.”

Violation of the mask rule on public transport, which has been imposed nationwide but is enforced at the state level, is punishable with a fine.
